Traveling to Tibet by train is a unique experience because it includes some of the most mesmerizing scenery in the world. The trains to Tibet leave from all eight gateway cities across China, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xining, etc.
It takes 1 to 2 days for most of the train rides going to Tibet from these cities. Life on the legendary Tibet trains is somehow a bit different from traveling on a train anywhere else. So, let's examine some of the necessary items that you need to prepare and bring with you to make the train journey more relaxing and comfortable for yourself.
1. Passport
You must have this ID card when traveling in China, whether you're boarding a plane or train, checking into a hotel, buying duty-free goods, or visiting some scenic spots. You need to use your passport information as ID in any of these situations. Therefore, your passport is the most indispensable item that you need to have during your trip.
2. Tibet Permit
In addition to a passport, foreign tourists will also need a Tibet permit to travel to Tibet. You will not be able to board the train if you do not have a Tibet permit, according to regulations.
From most of the gateway cities, travelers can board the train with a copy of the Tibet permit, but some cities like Chongqing, Lanzhou and Xi'an require the original Tibet permit to board the train.
3. Thermal Bottle
Many tourists choose bottled water while they take the train. Bottled water can be purchased in any supermarket or convenience store before you board the train. There are staff members on the train who sell water, beer, instant noodles and other snacks.
In fact, boiling water is provided on the train. If you bring a cup or a thermal bottle with you, then you can go to the boiling water dispenser to get water. Of course, the thermal bottle is recommended the most because you can seal it up so that it doesn't spill out too easily. Also, you can put the thermal bottle on the bed and easily fetch it whenever you want to drink water during your sleep.
4. Food: Pot Noodles, Snacks, Fruits
Even though there is a dining car on every Tibet train and prepared meals and snacks sold by train staff members, the prices are about two times more than the prices at a regular outside restaurant. It's wise to bring your own food with you while taking this long-distance Tibet train. Hot water is supplied from a dispenser that is equipped in each carriage, so it's convenient to make tea, instant coffee, pot noodles, etc. If you want to keep up your energy between meals just in case you get hungry, then you should bring breads, fruits, nuts and other packet snacks to tide you over.
5. Toiletries and Skin Care Products
You can't take a shower while on the train, but there is a washing area with water taps and mirrors in each carriage to perform simple cleaning tasks. So, remember to bring your own toothpaste, toothbrush, towel, soap, etc. Moreover, the train is fully equipped with heating and oxygen supplies. Since the air may be dry, we recommend that you use some basic skincare treatments to keep your skin moisturized if necessary.
6. Comfortable and Loose Clothes
It might not be convenient to change your clothes on the train because the toilet might be occupied regularly. Most people only take off their jackets and sleep, barely change to comfortable pajamas. The train turns the lights out at about 10:00PM. Wear a loose, comfortable T-shirt or shirt inside your outfit to stay comfortable. Good sleep will strengthen your body's resistance to the climate and help you better adapt to it.
7. Slippers
The train ride to Tibet usually takes between 1 to 2 days. If it's not too troublesome, you can take a pair of slippers with you. It's more convenient to wear slippers to the toilet or fetch water from a dispenser at the end of each carriage. Besides, it's more comfortable to walk around with slippers on the train anyway.
8. Earphones, iPad or Laptop
Beautiful scenery is best suited with pleasant music. While the train passes the grandiose mountains and grasslands, you can enjoy listening to your favorite music or watching your favorite movie as a way to entertain yourself in the evening. Just remember to download them onto your iPad or laptop ahead of time, as there's no Wi-Fi connection on the Tibet train.
9. A Good Book
It's really a beautiful sight to see someone reading by a window while taking the train. It is like some classic movie scene that feels peaceful and pleasant. Modern life moves so quickly that it leaves city residents without enough time to read a book quietly amongst themselves. This train trip may be an opportunity for you.
10. Toilet Paper
It's a good idea to bring plenty of toilet paper with you before you board the Tibet train. You can't count on any toilet paper available in the toilets on the train without having to pay extra for it.
11. Power Bank
There are charging plug bases available on the train. However, considering the huge demand for charging electronic devices by most of the passengers, it's advisable to take a power bank with you for recharging your own electronic devices.
12. Medicines
There is an oxygen supply available on all Tibet trains in case you have trouble breathing. However, you can prepare some pills, like Diamox, which can alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness just in case. Other medical care stuff, such as band-aids and pills for treating diarrhea, are also suggested.
13. Cash
Cash is king while consuming on the train. Debit/credit cards are not acceptable no matter if you buy snacks from the food trolley or meals in the dining car.
