Many tourists put Nepal and Tibet together while making travel plans. In this article, we’d like to introduce you the two ways of getting to Tibet from Nepal.
The first is to take the flight. Two air companies operate the flights from Kathmandu to Lhasa, and you can find at least 1 flight for a day either from Sichuan Airlines (3U) or from Air China (CA). And two flights a day are frequently available in high season (May to October).
The flying from Kathmandu to Lhasa is only an hour long, but when you check the flight time, please note Nepal is 2 hours and 15 minutes behind Tibet.

The second is to travel by overland via Gyirong border. It’s a new border after Zhangmu was closed after the earthquake in 2015. The transfer service from Kathmandu city to Gyirong border can be easily booked through travel agencies or hotels in Nepal. The road condition on Nepal side is rough and poor, and landslides sometimes occur during rainy season (July and August).
The drive takes almost 9 to 10 hours along narrow mountain road. The Chinese Customs at Gyirong border opens at 10:00 and closes at 17:30m (time based on GTM +8).
